Each year Variety receives hundreds of applications for financial assistance from children’s agencies that serve special needs, underprivileged and at-risk children. Individual committees divide applications into seven separate categories for review. Applications are reviewed to determine the agency’s need, purpose and services. Individual interviews are conducted with each agency to learn more about how funding will be used. This detailed process assures contributors that every dollar raised is used in the best possible manner.
-Acute – Primarily hospital projects and equipment.
-Convalescent – Agencies that provide residential services to children who suffer from severe physical, mental or emotional afflictions.
-Transportation – For agencies requesting a Sunshine Coach (15-passenger van or mini van). More than 345 Variety Vans have been granted to various agencies across the state.
-Underprivileged – Agencies that serve children in a community without regard to specific special needs.
-Youth at Risk – Short-term residential agencies that serve children who have special needs due to physical or chemical abuse, who have had a history of behavioral problems, or who are in need of emergency shelter.
-Variety at Work – Agencies that provide short-term recreational activities to special needs or underprivileged children.
-Preventative – Agencies that direct children to make positive choices regarding behavior and lifestyle, and/or agencies that seek to raise community awareness regarding the wellbeing of children.
Variety requires all grant recipients to submit a report outlining how the funds were expended and the difference it made within their organization and to the lives of the children they serve.
